Ken the Toastmaster would like to share this piece of news with the couples who are having difficulty finding a venue for their wedding. What’s more you can book me to be your on-board Master of Ceremonies. How’s that for being ‘cool!’
If you’ve just become engaged to be married and are having difficulty finding that perfect location for a wedding have you given any thought to getting married at sea?
You could get married in the Caribbean, in Europe or even near the top of an Alaskan glacier. It’s all possible and the costs are generally reasonable, depending upon the size of the party and your needs. One couple I spoke with found their cruise ship wedding to be perfect for them. “I just loved not having to do anything,” Jessica Kubicek-Sutherland says of her shipboard wedding.
Jessica and her husband Dustin were married aboard Holland America’s Oosterdam in San Diego in January.
Prices vary from over $2,700 for a group of 10 with few needs to Kubicek-Sutherland’s “you don’t have to do anything package,” which cost her $15,000. She said there were no other costs beyond that.
Everything from the minister to the flowers, the refreshments, cakes, memories album, clothes, music and those sunsets that you can’t buy were included in the bill.
The couple picked a dockside wedding in San Diego, primarily to ensure those who were not cruising had the opportunity to be part of their wedding. The honeymoon for the couple and 28 friends and relatives would take them to the Mexican Riviera. The bridal party and guests boarded around 10 a.m. on the day of the wedding, well ahead of the normal embarkation time.
With their cabins ready, they headed for the salon to have their hair done. By picking the all-inclusive package the wedding party was provided with dresses, tuxedos, shoes and flowers. Meanwhile, the remainder of the guests explored the ship, enjoyed some food and relaxed in the sunshine.
“At 1 p.m. we were married in the large Vista Lounge complete with tables, flowers, candles and everything for a perfect setting,” said Jessica. “After the wedding we went to the Crow’s Nest where we had a large wedding cake, dance floor, a DJ for the music, a full brunch buffet and drinks. “It all came to a finish around 3:30 p.m. when the non-travelling guests were escorted off the ship.” Cruise lines generally only allow one embarkation wedding per cruise. You can go online to sites such as cruisecritic.com to read about other people’s cruise wedding experiences and see what each cruise line has to offer. Some cruise lines, such as Princess and Celebrity, allow captains to conduct weddings in international waters.
